Look what layers can do for you!

According to Ryan Teal of Teal Salon in Portland Or, Layers ” are like what a screw or a nail is to a cabinet- you can’t make most cuts without them.” When done by a pro, they can give someone with fine hair more volume and can make big, fat hair look “skinnier” with more control.

Layers can also enhance your hair texture. “The more layers, the more texture you’ll get, including that bedhead, messy look,” Says Teal. “Product can make a big difference, too but the haircut has to be there first.”

In order to get the right layered look for you, Teal suggests brining in pictures. And when you come in for a consultation-some-thing you should have every time you visit your stylist — dont come in with your hair in a ponytail. “Drop it!” says Teal. “I’m looking at how your hair is hitting your face and I’m drafting a plan as I look at your eyes. This non-verbal communication is what enables a talented stylist to create a beautifully crafted cut.”

TRANSITION POINT

Variations on a theme

For this collection, the Teal Artistic Team of Portland, Oregon, opted to complete a study of faces with a sequence of transitional styling- a series where the model wears her hair versus the hair wearing the model. This experiment involved taking a pretty face and seeing what could be done hair wise, pushing how far one cut and color could be stretched into a variety of styles.

For each of the three models, The TEAL Artistic Team started with a highly textured look, which was created by applying handfuls of mousse mixed with curl forming lotion to damp hair. Take a look at the results!

For Kathleen, a ravishing red head, extra small perm rods were used as rollers to create the first look, which is just gorgeous pulled into a lovely up do. Wetting the hair and smoothing sections with a flat iron quickly creates a smooth finish. TEAL Salon in “Hair Preview Guide 2010″

March 30th, 2010

hair-style-guide-20103821

hair-style-guide-2010383The TEALs, the award-winning husband and wife team and co-owners of TEAL Salon (formerly Capello Salon) in Portland Oregon have a new collection! The latest body of work called “Prismatic Hues”features bold new looks with robust shapes and highly dynamic color. Makeup Lindsey Avenetti; Photos Taggart Winterhaulter for Purley Visual

Kira had very long naturally brown hair with over grown layers and oput of control bangs. To update her style The Teals created a dramatic look with bold blond shades in front and a series of rich chocolates every where else. To fit the color, a very blunt bang was added and than shattered out layers were applied to the front. The end result is a mud flap sort of feel with roundness on top and scooped into panels that swoop inward to hug her face.

To complete the style, The Teals used (The now discontinued brand of) Jet Boy Jet Girl Slick Boy pomade over the surface to smooth down any fly aways. System Control was misted over the surface for hold and a dab of Clay Boy was used to piece the ends just slightly.

Meredith had very heavy bangs, with one length hair that spanned all the way down to her elbows. It was so overly long that her face looked as if her face was being swallowed by the hair. Her color was a natural light brown that was colored to dark blond.

DeAnnalyn Teal wanted to balance the rest of her color to her natural eyebrow color to bring out her skin tone. To get the best of both worlds, she added dark mahogany hues and kept some of the lighter blond. That way her color was not totally solid.

The cut is a modern Coco Channel sort of look but with disconnected pieces in the front. Ryan Teal added a chewed off bang for edgy, bitten feeling. The hair was blow dried with a Denman brushed with a nickle sized amount of a light gel. Ryan flat wrapped to follow the shape of her head and to add soft roundness all while eliminating Merredith’s slight natural wave.

Amy’s hair was a natural dark blond shade with long overgrown layers. For her new color, DeAnnalyn created a dimensional series of blondes and reds. Ryan took over and started the cut with the fringe in mind. After prepping the hair with a straightening balm, he blowdried and flat ironed but leaving a slight bit of body. He took deep triangular section in front and cut a 60’s inspired, ultra bold fringe. Next he added shaggy layers. A fine mist of hairspray was used for soft hold while a shiny but light pomade was used over the surface to remove fly aways.
