The Teals Interview for Celebrity Hairstyles

October 26th, 2009

1002-celeb-hair-the-teals3This was an Interview I did about 3 weeks ago. Here is what it says if you cant read the small print.

Page 48

THE BEST CUT ION THE WORLD WONT WORK FOR YOU IF IT DOESNT FLATTER YOUR FACE SHAPE.

Just like the rest of us stars don’t necessarily have the perfect facial shapes. They just learn- often through trial and error- how to make the most of their flaws and flatter their assets. It’s all about illusions with height, volume and angles.

FIGURE OUT YOUR FACE SHAPE

To determine your face shape, brush your hair behind your ears and clip your bangs out of the way. Then, look in the mirror; you can even draw an outline of your face on the mirror with lipstick. Now, analyze what you see.

Your facial proportions are what determine your face shape, which is divided roughly into thirds. If your an ideal oval, the area from your hairline to the top of the nose (between your brows), the top of the nose to the top of the lips and the lips to the chin should be nearly equal. Use a measuring tape to be sure.

The star descriptions that follow- with expert analyses and tips from RYAN TEAL of TEAL SALON in Portland, OR- will help you figure out what face shape category you fall into… and how much better you could look in a different style.

HEART

The HEART-SHAPED FACE Like Hayden Panettiere’s is wider than it is long, with a narrow chin and most of the width at the forehead.

WHAT WORKS:

Full waves toward the bottom widen her face at the chin area and divert attention from the top.

WHAT DOESNT:

Straight hair is less a flattering move. “It Plays up her chin more.” Teal says.

ALSO TRY: A soft fringe- nothing too hard- to de-emphasize a high forehead

Actress Monet Mazur’s face shape is a variation on the classic heart- her chin is more prominent and squared off, while her forehead is proportional.

WHAT WORKS:

A bob with angled side bangs creates balance, bringing the viewer’s eye upward away from her chin. Plus, the flipped-out ends widen the bottom area in the same way as Hayden’s curls.

WHAT DOESNT:

“Bangs are not a good idea- She has such a strong jaw, they create a sharp triangular effect,” says Teal,

ALSO TRY: a little curl or wave positioned at the bottom.

SQUARE

The SQUARE-SHAPED FACE Like Drew Barrymore’s has a prominent jaw and, like the heart, it is wider than it is long.

WHAT WORKS:

Texture and length help soften her face’s angularity. Teal also prefers Drew’s warm red color to her more recent bleach-y blonde

WHAT DOESNT:

According to Teal, Drew shouldn’t wear her hair straight. “straight hair laying flat on a square face makes the angles look stronger. The length is also not the best for her- it draws a straight line across her neck, which is not her prettiest feature.”

ALSO TRY: Sides that come forward to camouflage the face’s width, interior layers and, if you want to go shorter, hair that is chin length.

ROUND

You have a ROUND FACE Like Alexis Bledel’s if your cheeks are full, round and wide.

WHAT WORKS:

Longer hair that’s worn close to the head slims her face. Bangs also helps by making her high forehead seem less prominent.

WHAT DOESNT:

A wider silhouette is a bad idea. “A short, round face needs height and length.”

ALSO TRY: A low ponytail worn tight to the head. “this would look nice on her. She should also wear fringe to play up her beautiful eyes.”

OBLONG

The OBLONG FACE Like this has a chin that is too wide in proportion to the  forehead.

WHAT WORKS:

“I love her hair back. the fringe creates a nice oval shape that flatters her face beautifully. This is one of my favorite looks.”

WHAT DOESNT:

“Those horrible long extensions look like a beaver stuck to her head,”Teal says. and length is the surest way to make a long face longer.

ALSO TRY: Hair that’s shoulder length or shorter with fullness on the sides. “A long skinny face needs height.”

Ryan at The Maly’s Seattle Show

October 1st, 2009

I awoke from my deep slumber or stupor (whichever the case may be) to the buzzing of a text message received at 7a.m. on Saturday morning, “That’s weird,” I thought.  My family was all comfy in their beds including my daughter, Tuesday, who rarely spends a night at home anymore. So I knew it couldn’t possibly be any of the them, nor was it  my mom because she doesn’t even know how to text.  Finally, after the third message, I decided that I had better answer because it might be kind of urgent.

6827_136463007910_519842910_2571178_5161093_n

It was Alexis, the Show and Special events coordinator for L’Oreal.  Apparently, one of the Headliners for a Seattle Hair Show which was happening on Sunday morning had fallen ill and could not make it and asked if I could possibly jump in.  I knew about the show (one of my Jr. Staff members,  Jacie was going to be helping with the makeup back stage) and I had actually thought about going but had already booked my entire weekend with business and family matters.   The show’s format of  “no sales” and pure education was appealing, not to mention that it has been a million years since I have had the opportunity to see a show.  I was starting to salivate as my creative juices started to flow at the mere idea of possibly being on stage again in Seattle.

6827_136463017910_519842910_2571179_1287001_n

I knew I wanted to go, but how could I?  I had already scheduled a “hands on” haircutting class at my salon for Sunday and my daughter had a concert that I really wanted to go to on Saturday night.  Well after some coaxing from DeAnnalyn (and crossing my fingers behind my back), we decided that it would be a good idea for me to go so that I could start getting back on the  “presentation” horse and help out my new found family, at L’Oreal Professional.

So after a full half day in the salon, I rushed to the Portland Airport where it actually took me more time to check and uncheck my luggage than it did to fly to Seattle.   I arrived at the Convention Center in Seattle just in time to miss all of the demonstration models.  Luckily, three presentation models, who by the way were amazing, were still in the building so in my mind and professionally speaking, “that was covered.”  I had yet to see the six demonstration models, but would not have the opportunity until 6 a.m. the following morning.

Just to let you know, I do not do stress well, especially if DeAnn (who is always on the other end of the teeter-totter) is not there to balance me out.   After 2 hours of sleep,  a full bottle of wine,  and 14 trips to the rest  room I was ready to meet the team in the lobby of the hotel. It was actually kind of funny because we did not tell Jacie I was coming so when she arrived at model call at 6:00 I yelled at her and told her she was late. Her eyes flew open like a deer in the headlights, her jaw fell to the floor and the color drained from her face in shock to see me there.   I laughed so hard I had to make a 15th trip to the restroom.  Ahhh good times!

The morning started a little slow as usual with everyone running around and not enough moving forward going on.   I practiced my “move slow but work fast”  technique.   I think this technique scares everyone but it pays off in the end.

The show was a great success, and everyone kept saying that I was the hero for coming through at the last minute, but the true heroes were my Team.  The Team that I got to meet and rely upon.   People like Jacie, and Debra for doing Make up.   Jodi who always had a smile on her face and was ready to work, and can pack a car like no one else. Scott who became my right arm without ever having worked with me.  He was able to adapt to my finishing style. Steven Cristobal, the only other person I have ever shared a stage with besides my wife, DeAnn.  Steven is a true COLORIST. Maya who kept everything moving so smoothly, she was like the mother hen. Alexis, who was in New York the whole time but when the going got tough she was on it, and everyone else who worked there butts off.  I can’t remember all of your names, but I do know who you are.6827_136460997910_519842910_2571143_884052_s

“STRONG HAIR

These images certainly are strong… In cut, color, styling and shape.  Even the finished photos fight to be noticed. Take a cue for this season’s upcoming looks and train your arsenal of skills to bring out your strengths.  Find inspiration from these over the top looks that you can use to separate your work from the rest.”

The biggest comment I get is,  “I would never wear that hair style!”  DUH.  I mean, come on, just because I am a hairdresser does not mean that everything I do needs to be wearable.  Does every painting or every picture need to be hung on your wall?

Let’s ask Dianne Arbus or Salvadore Dali?

I dare not compare myself to such artists,  but I do wish that clients as well as hairdressers could except our Art as Art, and except what we do behind the chair as our Craft.

Anyhow, for those of you who don’t know, we all practice Martial Arts in my family.  The Samurai influence came from that including  the fact that I am a video gamer.  I was playing a lot of War Craft, when the inspiration came to me.

(What was I thinking?)

2844_74066412910_519842910_1738774_7838225_n Kacey - I have to say Kacey is a Pro.  That hair piece on her head was made out of chicken wire and it was jabbing into her skull, but she still pulled off this amazing shot.  I think she looks like an Amazon.  She stands like 6′ 9″ and with the hair she was like 9 feet tall.  This is one of my personal favorites.

2844_74063327910_519842910_1738764_4878823_nChris - Chris was our “pitch”  hitter.  We called him at 6 o’clock on Monday, when the male model we had booked was a “no show” and we were to be out of the studio by 8 o’clock.   Chris drove in 45 minutes to be here and pulled off this shoot in the bottom of the last inning with only minutes to spare.  Chris, by the way,  is a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs.

I think he looks like NEO and I am a nerd.

2844_74063337910_519842910_1738765_2682394_n Candace - The inspiration for this shot was Afro Samurai, as in the new video game with Sam Jackson.  I saw the hair in a clip and wanted to recreate the look of a flowing Afro. DeAnnalyn tied the rope around the bottom which gives it the whole hair tie feeling.

This is wig made out of that cheap weaving hair (that you get from Sally’s Beauty Supply) that I backcombed and dipped in wood varnish.

2844_74063347910_519842910_1738766_79785_nAdazoe - I love working with Adazoe.   She is super hip, and even has her own vintage clothing store in Portland.  We used her last year and  decided to use her again this year. It is something about her eyes makes the character sing.  We met Adazoe on the set of an LG Flat Screen commercial and we became fast friends.

This is a recycled bit from last year’s shot that we sewed together, backcombed and dipped in wood varnish.

2844_74066432910_519842910_1738775_3180174_n Meridith - David, the photographer,  found her on Model Mayhem.  She had little or no portfolio to her name.  Originally,  we were going to use her only for the Color Collection,  but when one of the models needed to leave in a hurry, Meridith stepped in and gave us this shot.  Personally, I think this is up there with some of the best stuff D and I have ever done.

This hair piece is made out of wefts secured to a piece of drywall sandpaper, than cut to expose the color.

2844_74063317910_519842910_1738763_6159906_n1

Kasey - This is Kasey again,  the same model as in the first image.  Yes, that is her real hair. The sword in the shot adds to the intensity.  I like the pose.

2844_74063362910_519842910_1738767_6555818_n2

Errienne - Was actually a Beauty School student of mine who we shot with last year. I like to tell her that we use her only to make all of the other models look prettier.  But really, she is beautiful.  In this photo, as well as in last year’s photo,  it is her right hand that makes me love her.  She does that thing with her index finger, and that I think is so real.

This was one of the tougher pieces to make.  I think it took me close to 50 hours.  That is actually hair that I created into a bamboo helmet.  Suffice it to say that it would  take almost as many hours to explain how I did it.

2892_73944107910_519842910_1737519_745244_nThis is on page 67 of the magazine as well.  LeAnne Marshall made the collar.

Thank you for reading.
